Many of the very early settlers who came to Canada to make a new life for themselves and their descendants left virtually no written evidence of their life in a strange land. Possibly aware of this and fearful that later generations would not know of their ancestry, many of these pioneers chose to include their place of birth on their tombstone. This way of leaving some reminder of their origin was not fashionable for many years and is almost always to be found on only the oldest monuments in early cemeteries. This paper will cover some of the pioneers who are buried in Waterdown cemeteries and whose place of birth is documented on their tombstone.
