Obituary Notices of East and West Flamborough Township from 1858-1872

This Heritage Paper is another collection of Obituary Notices from the middle decades of the last century. These notices concern residents of the Flamborough area who died 1858-1872.

Inserted in Church Newspapers, they are very different from present day obituary notices, and are of great interest and value to researchers as they often contain a wealth of information about early township settlers.

Ellenor MACDONALD: Mrs. Ellenor MacDonald was born in England, and died in Waterdown, October 23, 1866, aged 54 years, survived by her husband and family.

Richard MOUNT: Richard, infant son of Page and Elizabeth Mount, East Flamborough, died March 18, 1865. The Baptist Minister assisted at the funeral.

Mrs. Rachel McNEVIN: Mrs. Rachel, daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Bates, was born in East Flamboro, Oct. 9, 1840, married J. C. McNevin, Dec. 27, 1864, and died May 8, 1866, survived by her husband and 1 son.

Thomas MORDEN: Mr. Morden was born in New Jersey, October 19, 1790, and came to Canada in 1802, settling in Flamboro West, where he died August 5, 1863, predeceased by his two youngest daughters, survived by his wife, 5 sons and 2 daughters. Thomas Morden belonged to a U.E.L. family. He served in the War of 1812, and in the suppression of the 1837 Rebellion, where he was promoted to captain in the militia.

Andrew PATTON: Andrew died Jan. 1, 1867, at Carlisle; age, 51 less one month.

Sarah POTTER: Mrs. Sarah Potter, daughter of James and Emma Biglow, and wife of Rev. Richard Potter, whom she married in 1861, died May 19, at the residence of her sister, Flamboro West, aged 42 years, survived by her husband, 1 small boy and a large number of relatives.

Mrs. RYAN: Mrs., a widow, was found lying in a culvert near Mr. Cramer’s farm, 21st ult.; in a dying state. She was removed to the Flamboro station, where she died in a few minutes. It appears that she had either fallen or been pushed off the embankment.
Issue 5 February 1862.

Mrs. Catharine J. RYCKMAN: Mrs. Catharine J., daughter of Solomon and Mary Griffin, and wife of Abraham Ryckman, died April 24, 1864, in her 31st year; survived by her parents, brothers, sisters, husband, and 5 children. Mrs. Ryckman was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Martha RYCKMAN: Mrs. Martha Ryckman, only child of William and Mary Smoke, was born on the Waterdown Circuit, January 25, 1835, and died in the same place, May 7, 1870, survived by her husband and four children.

John H. SANDERS, a Cabinet-maker of Wellington Square, died 24 April 1854, at the residence of his brother, Corney Sanders of Waterdown.

Mary SCOTT: Mary Scott, wife of Mr. Francis Scott died at Waterdown, 4 October 1858.

William SCOTT: William – An inquest was held in Waterdown last Sat. on the body of William Scott, a young man, who was drowned while bathing in the pond above Mr. Lottridge’s Mill.

Theodore SHUBERT: On Sunday morning, 2 boys found a man hanging in an old house on the Waterdown Road. His name was Theodore Shubert, a native of Hanover, Germany, a painter and glazier.

Mrs. Mary SMITH: Mrs. Mary, relict of the late John Smith, died 7th inst., in her 68th year, at Sydenham Cottage, West Flamboro.
Issue 30 January 1867.

William SMOKE: William, a farmer and old resident of East Flamboro, died at Waterdown, May 4th, of congestion of the brain, while sowing seed in one of his fields.
Issue 8 May 1872.

Tryphema STRAKER: Miss Tryphema was born at Roxham, C. E., May 16, 1842, and was converted on the Hungerford Circuit, September 13, 1857. About 2 years ago she came to Dundas, remaining for some time in the family of Rev. H. F. Bland, and subsequently taking a school in the vicinity of the Valley Church on the Waterdown Circuit. She died May 8, 1870, at the residence of J. D. Lafferty, Flamboro West.

Mrs. Elizabeth SUTTON: Mrs. Elizabeth, née Slater, wife of Samuel Sutton, whom she married in 1806, died at her residence near Freelton, July 10, 1861; survived by her husband, 3 sons, and 8 daughters. The funeral was held in the Baptist Church in East Flamboro. The Suttons had settled in this township in 1846.

Mrs. Jane THOMPSON: Mrs. Jane, relict of the late Richard Thompson, died last Tue.; age, 84. She resided for 51 years in East Flamborough.
Issue 17 January 1872.

Joseph VAN NORMAN: Joseph was born in the township of Upper [Smith]ville, Suserve County, Pennsylvania, and came to Canada with his family, settling near Millgrove, Flamboro West, when it was “amongst the wilds of Canada”. He died there, July 31, 1860; survived by his wife and children.

Sarah Louisa WILLOUGHBY: Sarah died at Waterdown, on the 7th inst. Sarah Louisa, 3rd daughter of Rev. W. Willoughby, in the 19th year of her life.
Issue July 9th, 1870.

Margaret WILSON: Margaret, age c. 9, who resides with Joseph Hamer on the farm of Hon. S. Mills, East Flamboro, fell into a well on the farm yesterday morning, and was drowned.
Issue 4 June 1862.

Mrs. Janet WISHART: In West Flamboro’ on the 11th October 1870, Janet, relict of the late Alex Wishart, Lieut. 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, aged 77 years. The Funeral will take place from the residence of her son, K. Wishart Esq., on Friday 14 October, at three o’clock.

Captain John YOUNG: Captain John, residing near Brown’s Wharf, Hamilton, on attempting to rise Sun. morning, fell backwards, and expired.
